Rhubarb, Victoria
Many of us have very fond memories of our mother’s strawberry rhubarb pie or compote – now you can grow your very own freshest of the fresh Rhubarb! Yum!
As pretty as it is tasty, this seed-grown heritage variety originated in Brighton, England c. 1920. Growing 2-3’ tall with big crinkly tropical-looking leaves, it is an early and heavy producer and is also reputed to be the sweetest variety. Plant it in a permanent bed or large container in full sun (it will grow in a bit of shade but will be less productive). Prepare the soil with lots of compost and space 3’ apart. Let them grow for a season (clip off flowers if they appear) and you can pick some stems the second year. The third year (and for the next 10-15 years) you can pick all but 4 stems per plant. Don’t cut with a knife but pull off the stems at the base with a twisting motion.
We send these newly grown seedlings with soil bundled in damp newspaper, plastic and a rubber band for shipping/pickup.
Seedlings are available for pre-sale here until April 1, 2025. Your seedlings are grown to order and will be available for pickup in mid-May, ready to go straight into your garden or container planters (scroll product photos for example seedling size). We are planning for seedling pickup to occur on Friday, May 16 from 10:00am-6:00pm at our roadside stand at 5195 State Route 38A. We will email in advance to remind you and will notify you about any changes to the schedule due to weather.
This year we are growing our seedlings using soil blocking methods, eliminating plastic cell trays (which are easily broken and need regular replacing) and encouraging root development through air-pruning. This results in a stronger seedling with a larger volume of soil attached and helps us avoid root-bound transplants. Additionally we are including locally-made wool pellets from Otter Lake Farm & Fiber in Weedsport, NY in our certified organic potting soil mix for added fertility.
Please visit us in person at our on-farm Spring Plant Sale to purchase more varieties of tomato, pepper, herb, flower and vegetable seedlings, berry bushes and strawberry plants! May 17-18 and May 24-25, 10am-2pm at our roadside stand at 5195 State Route 38A, Auburn, NY 13021.
NOTE: Seedlings are available for local pickup at our farm in Auburn, NY only (no shipping).
